Ultimo EP prima dell’uscita del nuovo album l’anno prossimo. Con «Shell» Federica Deiana mette al centro il pianoforte e la sua prossimità, senza scenografie. Ripresa ravvicinata, corde che respirano, pedale sorvegliato: un lessico di misura che sceglie l’essenziale e lascia al silenzio il compito di completare la frase. La scrittura preferisce una continuità ferma, un ordine interno che tiene insieme gesto e risonanza. Ne nasce un ascolto concentrato, terrestre, che lavora per sottrazione e restituisce alla melodia il proprio dovere: dire il necessario, non un grammo in più.

Qui agisce un’idea tradizionale del pianoforte come corpo vivo. Non c’è sdolcinatezza, non c’è compiacimento; c’è il mestiere di chi sa attendere la nota giusta e lasciare andare quella superflua. Il fraseggio è corto, il respiro largo; le pause funzionano come cerniere. Ogni attacco disegna un perimetro, ogni coda lo riconsidera. La mano evita il patetico e affida all’armonia piccoli scarti, quasi correzioni d’officina, che guidano senza dichiararsi. È musica che pretende attenzione e per coerenza la ottiene.

L’arco dell’EP procede con discrezione, come una stanza che lentamente si illumina. Il registro resta intimo e concreto, l’andamento è quello di un diario senza confidenze: fatti sonori, non confessioni. La ricerca timbrica mostra disciplina: legno, feltro, aria; tutto serve, nulla eccede. Nella parte finale un lieve allargamento del campo introduce toni elettronici sottili, non come deviazione ma come conseguenza naturale del percorso. Il pianoforte non arretra: guadagna spazio proprio perché lo condivide. La tradizione contemporanea viene praticata, e la contemporaneità entra quando serve, senza strappi.

Si riconosce l’esperienza di studio e la continuità con i lavori precedenti pubblicati su Home Normal, ma «Shell» concentra e rifinisce. L’ornamento è ridotto a margine, la melodia regge la struttura, l’ordine delle dinamiche tiene la stanza in equilibrio. Mastering misurato, fotografia di copertina che suggerisce e non spiega: dettagli allineati alla poetica del progetto, dove l’immagine e il suono giocano la stessa partita della sobrietà. Anche la scelta di un’uscita digitale a profilo basso sembra parte della stessa etica: la sostanza davanti a tutto, la fiducia nel tempo lungo dell’ascolto.

Colpisce soprattutto il rapporto tra prossimità e distanza. Il microfono accorcia lo spazio, ma la scrittura lascia aria: si rimane vicini al martelletto e, nello stesso tempo, abbastanza lontani da sentire come la risonanza ordina il silenzio. Ciò che resta è una chiarezza rara: non la brillantezza, piuttosto una nitidezza che permette ai contorni di emergere senza durezza.

«Shell» si affida alla tradizione per parlare al presente: suonare bene, ascoltare il riverbero, accettare il limite come forma. In un tempo che chiede volume, arriva una risposta a bassa voce, capace di reggere più ascolti senza logorarsi. E nell’ultima risonanza dei brani di solo pianoforte, quando il suono trattiene il fiato e la stanza rimane in attesa, accade la cosa semplice: il giorno si posa, e il respiro trova il suo passo.

The final EP before next year’s new album. With “Shell” Federica Deiana puts the piano, and its nearness, he centre, without scenery. Close-miked capture, breathing strings, a watchful pedal: a vocabulary of restraint that chooses the essential and lets silence complete the sentence. The writing favours steady continuity, an inner order that binds gesture and resonance. The result is a concentrated, earthbound listening that works by subtraction and restores melody to its task: to say what is necessary, not a gram more.

At work here is a traditional understanding of the piano as a living body. No saccharine, no self-indulgence; rather the craft of waiting for the right note and letting the superfluous one go. Phrasing is short, the breath wide; pauses function as hinges. Each attack draws a perimeter, each decay reconsiders it. The hand avoids the pathetic and entrusts to harmony small shifts, almost workshop tweaks, that guide without declaring themselves. This is music that demands attention, and earns it through coherence.

The EP’s arc proceeds discreetly, like a room that slowly fills with light. The register remains intimate and concrete, the gait that of a diary without confidences: sonic facts, not confessions. The timbral search shows discipline: wood, felt, air; everything serves, nothing exceeds. In the final stretch, a slight widening of the field introduces subtle electronic tones, not as a detour but as the natural consequence of the path. The piano does not retreat; it gains space precisely because it shares it. Tradition is practised in the present, and contemporaneity enters when needed, without rupture.

Study and continuity with the previous Home Normal releases are evident, yet “Shell” narrows and refines. Ornament is kept to the margins, melody bears the structure, the ordering of dynamics keeps the room in balance. Measured mastering, a cover photograph that suggests rather than explains: details aligned with the project’s poetics, where image and sound play the same sober game. Even the choice of a low-profile digital release seems part of the same ethic: substance first, trust in the long time of listening.

What strikes most is the relationship between proximity and distance. The microphone shortens space, yet the writing leaves air: one remains close to the hammer while staying far enough to hear how resonance arranges silence. What remains is a rare clarity, not brilliance but a crispness that lets edges emerge without harshness.

“Shell” leans on tradition to speak to the present: play well, listen to the reverberation, accept limit as form. In a time that demands volume, here comes a low-voiced answer, able to withstand repeated listening without wearing thin. And in the final resonance of the solo-piano pieces, when the sound holds its breath and the room waits, the simple thing happens: the day settles, and the breath finds its pace.
